New Year’s Eve

January 1, 2011

A tiki feast with close friends. After a long drive home from the Midwest to find 2 feet of snow on the ground in Hoboken, a tiki feast was exactly what we needed to relax.

We kept the party small, just a few friends, and the menu simple — Polynesian fare and homestyle cooking: Soy-glazed shortribs, coconut rice with pineapple, green beans with ginger, and a cucumber salad, followed by a tequila-glazed pineapple upside-down cake.

As we finished the meal, Tim decided to party Trader Vic’s style with some Scorpion bowls, essentially several different types of rum combined with some fruit juices. Given that we’d already been enjoying zombies and Mai Tais, this is where the night gets a little fuzzy. (I danced on our ottomans with Jessica?)

One thing I do remember — after hearing a complaint that we couldn’t find Point Break to rent or download, our friend Ryan piped up that he had a copy on DVD and ran home (2 blocks away) to get it. We were then treated to a strange showing of the movie, where Tim decided to interject musical interludes (and really, is the dialogue that great?). Ryan declared it the best way to watch the movie, but the rest of us weren’t convinced. Once the movie ended, and despite Tim’s pleas for one more Scorpion bowl, our guests decided to pack it in and go home, sated and happy.
