Crossing the Delaware

April 9, 2011

Who knew Washington was entering Jersey when he crossed the Delaware? After a rough March, Tim and I decided to get out of town for the day; he took me to Pennsylvania, just across the state border from New Jersey.

The drive was quick, no more than a couple of hours. By 3.30 we were in Pennsylvania on the banks of the Delaware. While driving, I’d found the website of a local winery, Crossing Vineyards, and we stopped for a tasting. They had quite the selection, and we took home bottles of their Cab Franc and Chambourcin for another day, as well as their rosé for the upcoming visit of Tim’s mom, Jane.

After the tasting, we drove down to the celebrated crossing area on the banks of the Delaware. And all I could think was, Washington really had to sneak into New Jersey?

Our final stop was a pub owned by a local Lexus dealer, the Black Bass Hotel, a property that dates back to the 1740s and apparently turned away George Washington for the night at one point (the owner was a Tory). Dinner was excellent and I loved the collection of English royalty memorabilia displayed throughout the bar — apparently, the previous owner had loved the English royal family and had knick knacks celebrating royals all the way back to Bertie’s father, George V.

With the sun setting and full stomachs, we turned the car towards New Jersey again and made our way home just after dark.
